Professor David Hurd is a native of Brooklyn, New York. He was appointed to the faculty of

General Seminary in 1976. Prior to his undergraduate studies at Oberlin College, he attended

both the High School of Music and Art and the Juilliard School in Manhattan. He has, at various

times, served as Assistant Organist of Trinity Church and St. Paul’s Chapel, and Organist and

Director of Music at The Church of the Intercession and at All Saints’ Church. He has held

regular and adjunct faculty appointments at Duke University, the Manhattan School of Music,

Westminster Choir College and Yale University. Since 1997 he has been Organist and Music

Director at the Church of the Holy Apostles, Chelsea, concurrently with his appointment at

General.

In 1977 Prof. Hurd was awarded first prizes both in organ playing and in improvisation at the

International Congress of Organists. He has concertized extensively throughout North America

since that time under the representation of Phillip Truckenbrod Concert Artists. In 1981 he was

invited to perform at the Internationaal Orgelfestival Haarlem, meeting in Gouda, the

Netherlands, during which he received the diploma for improvisation of the Stichting

Internationaal Orgelconcours. He has participated in the adjudication of several major

competitions in the areas of organ, improvisation and composition. He has received many

commissions for choral, organ, and instrumental works. Premieres of his commissioned works

have been in such major New York venues as Avery Fisher Hall, Carnegie Hall, The Cathedral

Church of Saint John the Divine, Trinity Church (Wall Street), and the Basilica of the Shrine of

the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC. He has a considerable catalogue of published

choral and organ compositions including a recently released collection of 77 hymn settings

entitled “I Sing as I Arise Today.” His liturgical compositions are represented in many

denominational and ecumenical hymnals in North America and abroad. He has received

numerous recognitions including being named Distinguished Composer for 2010 by the

American Guild of Organists.

In another sphere of music-making he performs regularly with Chelsea Winds, a recorder consort

of which he was a founding member in 1993 and for which he has arranged much music. He has

also been Assistant Director of the Manhattan Recorder Orchestra.
