On Tuesday, February 7 at 8 p.m. in the Tutu Center noted author Christopher Webber will speak on his newest book, American to the Backbone, the story of James W.C. Pennington, a forgotten hero of nineteenth century America—a former slave who became a Yale scholar, a congregational pastor, and an international leader of the Antebellum abolitionist movement. Christopher Webber, a 1956 GTS graduate and a recipient of the Seminary’s honorary doctorate, is the author of a number of books ranging from a guidebook for vestries to a study of Christian marriage. American to the Backbone brings to life this forgotten pioneer, who helped lay the foundation for the contemporary civil rights revolution and inspire generations of future leaders.
