Dear All, As Lent approaches, it becomes apparent that our expressions of this time diverge greatly. For some, it is a time of scaling back and simplifying. For others, it is a time of penance and fast in one form or another. For others, it is a time that one considers taking on a new discipline or effort in the service of God.
As coordinator for Social Justice efforts, I wanted to suggest a few opportunities that may fit into your Lenten discipline.
Occupy Faith Cupcakes and Conversation - Tuesday February 28th following dinner and Eucharist - Seabury Auditorium Leaders of Occupy Faith will be coming to discuss the impact of faith and their experiences in the Occupy Wall Street movement. All are invited to come, ask, and explore what role social justice has in the totality of their faith. If you are interested in helping with this (set up, clean up, cupcake baking, escorting guests), please let me know.
Social Justice Opportunities We have several students who are involved with various social justice and outreach efforts in the city. It ranges from homeless shelters to food banks to worship in a park that feeds the poor. A list is available here: https://sites.google.com/a/gts.edu/studentoutreach/. If you are interested in any of these or something different, I strongly encourage you to contact the student liaison or I. Lent can be a wonderful time to reflect on how you use your time or explore ways that God may be calling you to greater acts of service.
Financial Stewardship & Tuesday Night Offerings Several ministries here are always in need of support. If you were thinking about using Lent as a time of a change in spending habits, several outreach efforts can be blessed by your funds. Our Tuesday Night offerings will be going to The St. Peter's Food Bank and then Holy Apostle's Soup Kitchen over the next two months.
Episcopal Relief and Development Also, Episcopal Relief and Development provides wonderful meditations and resources for Lent. Several of you have probably encountered the in your Parish. They can be accessed here: http://www.er-d.org/lent/
As always, if you have any ideas or suggestions for social justice efforts at General Seminary or elsewhere, please don't hesitate to contact me.
Blessed time of preparation, mary julia jett social justice coordinator
