The General Theological Seminary of the Episcopal Church (GTS), located in the city of New York, invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean and President.

This search takes place at a crucial moment in the life of GTS and The Episcopal Church which it serves. The Board of Trustees seeks a person who is an energetic, faithful Christian who will lead GTS into its third century of service to the Church. We encourage applications or nominations from all qualified candidates, inviting a diversity of gender, race, culture, sexual identity and orientation which comprises the company of the faithful.

In the course of the last decade GTS has renewed its residential Master of Divinity program; broadened its Master of Arts and various non-degree offerings; expanded its commitment to diversity in preparing candidates for all roles of leadership in the Church; and conducted successful annual fund-raising campaigns. Despite facing significant economic challenges, under the creative and determined leadership of its current President, the Rev. Lang Lowrey, its Board of Trustees and a dedicated faculty and staff, the Seminary embarked on a remarkably successful new program, The Plan to Choose Life. The Plan has completed the first stage by eliminating all debt, restoring the Seminary’s endowment, and improving and modernizing its facilities. GTS has adopted a Vision Statement and is preparing a concrete Strategic Plan to assure that it remains a center of learning and formation for leaders of The Episcopal Church, and others, throughout the 21st Century. We now seek a Dean and President to lead us into the next phase, which will involve improving present programs, building new programs and student enrollment through innovation, balancing operating budgets, raising new endowment funds and positioning GTS to develop new leaders for a revitalized Episcopal Church.

It is in this light that GTS is seeking a Dean and President who:

  • Is a confirmed member of the Episcopal Church, is deeply familiar with the life of the Episcopal Church, and has the vision, energy and leadership ability to shape GTS as a vital part of developing leaders for an ever-changing church.
  • Has the academic qualifications and administrative experience required for leadership of an accredited graduate institution.
  • Is open to and encouraging of innovative ways of carrying out the mission and vision of GTS and in broadening its reach.
  • Has the demonstrated ability to delegate responsibility to and lead senior staff.
  • Has demonstrated competence in community relations and fund-raising. The candidate should understand that institutional advancement will demand a significant part of his or her time.
