In the Easter 2013 term, the spiritual directors who minister to the seminary community will be changing their schedules, and we will also be bidding farewell to James Warnke, so please do read this update about the spiritual direction ministry available to all.
Everyone within the community may see a spiritual director, once, just a few times, or as part of an ongoing relationship.
To schedule a session with Louise Litke or Nigel Massey, click here for the appointments calendar.
If you wish to see Barbara Crafton, who prefers to run her own schedule, you may reach her by email here.
Westina Matthews will not be accepting new directees in Easter 2013: She will be in contact with current directees to arrange meeting times.
James Warnke will not be offering ministry on the Close in Easter 2013.
Spiritual direction is about holy companionship as you grow in relationship with God. A spiritual director is someone with whom you can speak confidentially and honestly about your experiences of God, who will accompany you as you explore your spirituality, and to whom you can be accountable in your spiritual disciplines. A spiritual director will listen as you share your interior life, notice how God is present for you, teach and encourage you to try new ways of praying, and help you discern God’s good purposes for you. In Easter 2013, GTS will be blessed by the ministries of four spiritual directors who will regularly visit the Close. Any member of the GTS community—student, professor, staff member, or family member—is welcome to meet occasionally or regularly (usually once a month) with a spiritual director. This ministry is a gift from the seminary to you.
Schedule Changes in Easter 2013
Several of the spiritual directors are changing their schedules in Easter 2013. Barbara Crafton will switch to Wednesdays, from early afternoon through the evening. Nigel Massey will now alternate between Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. His first day of ministry will be Thursday, January 31. Louise Litke will be here Monday through Thursday, February 4-7.
Sadly, Fr. James Warnke will not be able to travel to the Close, because his visual and worsening orthopedic disabilities are making travel from New Jersey on public transportation too unsafe. He will be available, however, for any directees who wish to continue with him either by telephone or by traveling to him to his New Jersey location about a half-hour bus ride from the seminary. He will be personally in contact with directees within the next few days, or you may call him at 201-835-8223.
Biographies of the spiritual directors, guidance for you about their ministries at GTS, and instructions for scheduling appointments are available on the web pages of the Center for Christian Spirituality here.
Please keep your appointments! Write them down in every calendar, and pray for the Spirit to guide you there!
Financial Gifts to Support the Spiritual Direction Ministries
Spiritual Direction is a gift to everyone in the General Seminary comunity to encourage spiritual wellness. The seminary does offer the spiritual directors modest compensation and expense reimbursements, however, for their ministries. If you wish to support their presence and make a free-will financial gift to the seminary in gratitude for the spiritual direction you receive, you may write a check payable to “General Theological Seminary” with the notation “Spiritual Directors” in the memo line. You may either give the check to the Institutional Advancement Office on the reception level of Seabury Hall or to to the Rev. K. Jeanne Person, in Seabury 302. Thank you!
