The Rev. Suzanne Guthrie and her students in the summer course Pretending Bible Stories invite all members of the Seminary community, including children, to Time, and Times, and Half a Time: St. Michael and the War in Heaven, a one-hour experience of Bible play. Come play the story of Michael fighting the dragon, from the Book of Revelation, on Friday, July 19, from 3:30pm to 4:30pm in Seabury Auditorium. The course, part of the Spiritual Guidance of Children program, is teaching a method of Bible study that uses theatrical improvisation techniques for gaining new insights into Biblical texts. Rather than performance, "playing the text" involves everyone, who together create scenes of people, objects and plots. After playing together, participants share personal revelations that yield new understanding and engagement with the text.
Prof. Guthrie is promising to bring a dragon head, the dragon's tail, the sword of St. Michael, and various demon and angel masks and cloaks. She has a smoke machine, but we are not sure lovely Anthony Khani will allow this! For the conversation after the Bible play, the Seminary will provide angel and devil food cake and iced tea for treats.
This method of Bible study is appropriate for all ages. Please come and play!
