The Rev. Canon Charles L.L. Poindexter, Class of 1955, died Nov. 25, 2014 at the age of 82. Born April 11, 1932 to Walter Poindexter and Pearl M. Robinson in Richmond, Va., he attended West Virginia State University and Philadelphia Divinity School before furthering his studies at General and then Chichester Theological Seminary in England. He was ordained to the diaconate and the sacred priesthood in 1958 in the Cathedral of St. John the Divine.
Poindexter began his ministry in Yonkers, N.Y. He later moved to Philadelphia to become rector of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in 1964 where he engineered the merger of two parishes, St. Barnabas and St. Luke’s in 1968. Under his leadership, St. Luke’s became one of the largest and wealthiest parishes in the Diocese of Pennsylvania.
In 1969, Poindexter founded St. Barnabas Episcopal School where he was headmaster until 1975. During his 33 year ministry in Philadelphia, he served on many boards and diocesan committees. He retired from St. Luke’s in 1994 and continued his service to the ministry in Pennsylvania and Delaware.
He moved back to Richmond in 1999 where he served as Priest in Charge at St. Philip’s Church for six years, assisted at Old Christ Church, Emmanuel Church and as interim rector at The Church of the Epiphany.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers Wellington and Walter Poindexter and niece Ruby Poindexter. He is survived by his wife of 52 years Judith Owens Poindexter; children Maria Poindexter, Byron (Cameron) Poindexter and Evangeline Poindexter; granddaughter Kyla; great-grandchildren Kyri and Kasia; sister Susan P. Anderson; nephew John Anderson; and nieces Gail Anderson Margaret P. Howlette and Barbara P. Webb and other relatives and friends.
A Virginia memorial service was held Jan. 3 at 2 p.m. at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church in Richmond. A Pennsylvania memorial service was held Jan. 10 at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Philadelphia.
