IN MEMORIAM: Grahame Butler-Nixon '64

The Rev. Grahame Butler-Nixon, Class of 1964, died January 19, 2015 at Agape Hospice House in Columbia, South Carolina at the age of 82. A Requiem Eucharist was celebrated at Grace Episcopal Church, Camden, South Carolina on January 24 with interment in the church's Memorial Garden following the service. Butler-Nixon was born in Sydney, Australia, graduated from the University of Adelaide Law School, served in the Australian Foreign Service, and was ordained a priest in the Anglican Church of Australia. He came to the United States in 1963 for graduate study at General, and later at the University of Pennsylvania.

Butler-Nixon served as the 14th Rector of Grace Church in Newark from 1971-1977, and on the diocesan Standing Committee from 1975-1977. He also served parishes in Long Island, New York, and Asheville, North Carolina, before being called as rector of Grace Episcopal Church in Camden, South Carolina, in 1986 where he remained until retiring in 1997. He became an American citizen in 1987 at a ceremony in the church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gordon and Joyce Butler-Nixon, and a brother, Warren Butler-Nixon. Surviving are a sister, Colleen Litchfield, a brother, Howard Butler-Nixon, and nieces and nephews.
