The 78th General Convention of The Episcopal Church recently wrapped up in Salt Lake City, and The General Theological Seminary showed a strong presence. Spearheaded by Donna Ashley, Vice President, Advancement, General's booth on the exhibition floor was staffed by administration, students, and board members throughout all the opening hours. A steady stream of convention goers, including many alumni, stopped by to discuss General Seminary, and perhaps even left with a General Seminary penguin, notepad, or pair of sunglasses.
Visitors to the booth were encouraged to use their newly acquired General Seminary notepad to submit a word that represents what they value most about ministry. At the end of each day the accumulated submissions were compiled into a word cloud – the larger the word, the more often it had been submitted.
In addition to the booth, General hosted three "Conversations with General" sessions at the Salt Lake City Hilton where those who had questions or concerns could discuss them with staff, students, board members and the Dean in an informal setting over pastries or sandwiches. These sessions were well-attended with around 20-25 participants at each.
On June 30, the Seminary hosted its traditional General Convention dinner at the Cathedral Church of St. Mark, with 120 alumni and friends attending. The program included remarks from the Rt. Rev. Clifton Daniel III, Chair of General's Board of Trustees, as well as from the Rev. Dr. Scott White, Class of 1996 and President of the Alumni Executive Committee, Dr. Tommie Watkins, Jr., Class of 2016, and the Very Rev. Kurt H. Dunkle, Dean and President.
