The Rev. Canon James Brian Ponder, Class of 2004, has been called as Canon-elect for Administration and Finance in the Diocese of Mississippi. He will assume his duties full-time upon the retirement of the current Canon in February 2016. Prior to this appointment, he served in various capacities of diocesan leadership in both Mississippi and West Tennessee, including chairing the Diocese of Mississippi's Transition Committee (2013-2014). This appointment signals a return to work for, and on behalf of, the Diocese and Bishop of Mississippi. Ponder had been a lay member of staff before entering The General Theological Seminary in 2001, beginning ministry as a rising college senior and continuing for another four years post-graduation.
Ponder tells us "what an honor it is to serve my God, my diocese and my bishop at such an exciting time in our common life. I am humbled by the invitation to join Bishop Seage's staff and to partner with him as he helps us live into continued and revitalized mission and ministry in this wonderful place."
Ponder has also served as Rector of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Meridian, Mississippi, Associate at Grace-St. Luke’s in Memphis, Tennessee, Chaplain, Mississippi State University, and Associate Rector at Church of the Resurrection in Starkville, Mississippi, where he served 18 months as Interim Rector.
