V.K. McCarty, Class of 2011, presented a research paper at the Eighth International Conference of the Sophia Institute held at Union Theological Seminary on December 4, 2015. The theme for this year’s academic conference was “The Sacred Arts of Eastern Orthodoxy.” Her presentation examined a Byzantine hymn-writer whose work has been incorporated into the Orthodox Liturgy. McCarty's paper, “Illuminating the Incarnation: The Life and Work of the Ninth-Century Hymnographer Kassia,” explores a beloved Orthodox Christmas hymn composed by the Constantinopolitan Abbess. The conference also celebrated the publication launch of its newest proceedings book, Healing, Reconciliation & Forgiveness in Eastern Orthodox Perspectives (New York: Theotokas Press, 2015). In keeping with McCarty’s research emphasis on Biblical Studies and Early Christian Women while at General Seminary, her paper published in the new book is, “Recipe for Reconciliation: Paul's Charge to Syntyche and Euodia in Phil. 4:2-7.” To view the article online, click here.
