IN MEMORIAM: Elinor Schneider '51


Elinor M.E. Schneider, Class of 1951, of South Kingstown, Rhode Island, and formerly of Charlestown and Richmond, died peacefully at the age of 89, surrounded by family on August 27, 2016. Schneider was the beloved wife of the late Stewart P. Schneider. Born in Portsmouth, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Henry H. and Eleanor (Christ) Eccles. She is survived by her daughter, Eleonore “Beth” Schneider and partner Jochen Siegenthaler of Zurich, Switzerland, and her son, Edwin Schneider of North Kingstown.

Elinor graduated from Oberlin College and Teachers College, Columbia University, and studied at General Theological Seminary’s Wyndham House, where women could train to be Directors of Religious Education before they could be considered seminarians. She worked in the National Education Department of The Episcopal Church in New York City, where she met her future husband, Stewart.

She had been a member of the Arbutus Garden Club, Fayerweather Craft Guild, Southern New England Emmaus and St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church. She loved the beauty of nature, especially birds and flowers, and was a published author.

The family wishes to thank the Brookdale South Bay team in South Kingstown for their three years of loving care given to Elinor as well as Hope Hospice & Palliative Care of Rhode Island for the comfort provided to Elinor and her family in her final days.

A memorial service was held on September 3 at St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church, Kingston, Rhode Island.
