In Memoriam: Carl Wilke ‘44

The Rev. Canon Carl E. Wilke, Class of 1944, died on St. Stephen's Day at the age of 97 in Aliso Viejo, CA. Born in Milwaukee, he felt the call to ordained ministry while in high school, and was educated at Marquette University, General, and Nashotah House.

Wilke’s 70 years of ordained ministry included 15 as rector of Christ Church in Springfield, Missouri, where he helped Morning Prayer-loving congregants learn to love the 1979 "Book Of Common Prayer." After his retirement in 1985, he served as a supply priest at St. Andrew's Church in Mountain Home, AR and at St. John's Church, Neosho, MO. From 1990-1997 he served as an associate rector at St. John's Episcopal Church in Springfield, MO.

His wife, Frances, died in 1988. Canon Wilke moved to Orange County in 2006, assisting at Faith Church in Laguna Niguel and volunteering as a chaplain at MemorialCare Saddleback Medical Center.

He is survived by his four children: Joan Wilke Cavanagh of Granite Bay, CA, Carl Edward Wilke, Jr. of Chapel Hill, NC, Anne Mary Wilke of San Jose, CA and Peter Killian Wilke of Laguna Niguel, CA; four grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
