Interseminary Dialogue

Inter-Seminary Dialogue--note new time

GTS will host the next Inter-Seminary Dialogue (ISD) next Thursday, February 7th from 7 - 9 pm in the Seabury Auditorium. Please come after Evensong and the induction of the new Guild members. ISD generally meets one evening each month during the school year at one of the local seminaries. A few of these are St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Seminary, St. Joseph’s Catholic Seminary, Academy of Jewish Religion, Jewish Theological Seminary, Hebrew Union Seminary, Union Theological Seminary and General Theological Seminary. There are no membership requirements - we simply come together with others who are interested in a dialogue about common interests.

Our topic this month will be a conversation around our opportunities beyond seminary in each of our traditions - what is the stereotypical or normal path and what other paths are emerging for persons graduating from seminary?

Light snacks (kosher) and soft drinks will be provided.

Walt Kindergan

GTS ISD Coordinator

Inter-Seminary Dialogue at AJR

The next ISD will be at the Academy of Jewish Religion (AJR) in Yonkers on Monday, November 5th.  Light refreshments will be served and good conversation is guaranteed. Since AJR is not so easily reached by public transportation, we will ask for commitments ahead of time in order to try to provide some transportation.  All students who have an interest in interesting discussions with other seminarians are welcome and encouraged to attend.  Please let Walt Kindergan know if you would like to attend.

Inter-Seminary Dialogue This Thursday Evening

Our first Inter-Seminary Dialogue event of the year will take place this Thursday at the Jewish Theological Seminary (3080 Broadway) from 7 PM until roughly 9 PM.  This event will be purely social, a chance to greet one another at the start of this new academic year and discuss exciting ideas for future ISD events.  A kosher, vegetarian main dish will be provided in addition to other sides dishes and goodies. As you read last week, the Inter-Seminary Dialogue meets generally one evening each month during the school year at one of the local seminaries.   Those participating this year are Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion, Yeshivat Chovevei Torah, Yeshivat Maharat, Academy for Jewish Religion, Saint Joseph's Seminary, Saint Vladmir's Orthodox Theological Seminary, General Theological Seminary, and Union Theological Seminary.  There are no membership requirements, we simply come together with others who are interested in a dialogue about common interests.

This is a wonderful opportunity to expand our horizons and meet students from other local seminaries to share information about our respective faith traditions and to compare our seminary experiences and life journeys.  ALL interested students are invited and encouraged to attend.  Please come and bring only your interest and curiosity!

We will meet together at the 21st Street gate and depart at 6:00pm to walk to 7th Ave and 23rd St where we will take the Uptown "1" train, getting off at 116th Street.  From there it is a short walk to JTS.

The next ISD event will be held at Union Theological Seminary on October 24th.

Walt Kindergan is the GTS student coordinator and Professor Bob Owens is the faculty advisor to the group.  If you have questions or comments, please see Walt.

Inter-Seminary Dialogue

For a number of years, students from General have met with seminarians from other local seminaries to share information about our respective faith traditions and to compare our seminary experiences and life journeys.  These meetings comprise an ad-hoc group called the Inter-Seminary Dialogue (ISD). ISD meets generally one evening each month during the school year at one of the local seminaries.  A few of these are St. Vladimir's Orthodox Seminary, St. Joseph's Catholic Seminary, Jewish Theological Seminary, Hebrew Union Seminary, Union Theological Seminary and General Theological Seminary.  There are no membership requirements, we simply come together with others who are interested in a dialogue about common interests.

ISD events will be announced in advance and all interested students are invited and encouraged to attend.  Walt Kindergan is the student coordinator here at General and Professor Bob Owens is the faculty advisor to the group.

GTS will host the ISD meeting in February this year.

InterSeminary Dialogue - Monday

The next InterSeminary Dialogue meeting is Monday night, April 23 at the Academy of Jewish Religion (AJR) in Riverdale, from 7-9:00pm.  PIZZA will be served.   Jeff Evans will lead our group but will join the group after an event at his Field Ed. parish.  Please let Jeff know if you plan to attend. All students are invited to this last InterSeminary Dialogue event of the year.  As a trans/post-denominational seminary, AJR encompasses a broad spectrum, from Conservative through Reconstructionist, Renewal, Reform, and other multi-experiential Judaism.  Consequently, they  have a diversified approach to their study, theology, and worship. They will have a few people talking about their experiences in and their approach to this diversification of study and practice.  Then there will be time for small group discussion.

The address is of AJR is 6301 Riverdale Ave, Riverdale (on the campus of The College of Mount Saint Vincent).

Security will direct you to the Administration Building.  As you enter the Admin Bldg, turn left, go past the cafeteria and take the elevator to the 5th floor.  As you exit the elevator, turn left.

AJR is looking forward to welcoming the group to one of the last events at their current home at the College of Mount Saint Vincent.  As of June 1, they will be moving to our own new home up in Yonkers!

And remember - Pizza will be served!

Interseminary Dialogue - Here at General - Feb 23rd

The General Theological Seminary will host the Interseminary Dialogue on Thursday, 23 February 2012 from 7:00 pm until 9:00 pm in the Seabury Auditorium. Our discussion topic will be "Dwindling Congregations in a Post Modern World."

The Interseminary Dialogue takes place almost monthly and is composed of representatives of the Jewish and Christian seminaries in the New York area.  We meet to discuss topics of interest from an interfaith perspective.  It is a good way to connect with others from the broader world of faith.  Attendance is free-flowing - no membership or prior attendance needed.

As the host seminary this month, we would like a good turnout for this event.  We can promise interesting conversation with other committed students on a journey in ministry and theological studies.  All are invited to attend to help us welcome our guests and join our discussion on Thursday, the 23rd.

Light refreshments will be served.

Interseminary Dialogue at GTS

GTS will host the next Interseminary Dialogue on Thursday, February 23, 2012, from 7:00 pm till 9:00 pm.  This is a great opportunity to meet seminarians from other local schools and to talk about life, vocations, studies and topics of interest to all.  We hope to have a good "home seminary" turn out.  If you'd like to attend, RSVP to me (jevans@gts.edu) or Linda Racen (lracen@gts.edu).
