spiritual direction

Spiritual Directors Available to the GTS Community

Spiritual direction is about companionship. In a Christian context, a spiritual director is someone who accompanies you as you explore your spirituality and grow in relationship with God. Spiritual direction can help you listen for the voice of God and live more fully into Christian faith. A spiritual director will invite you to reflect on your life in the light of faith, guide you in prayer and spiritual practices, co-listen with you in discerning God’s good purposes for you, and encourage your baptismal discipleship.

For the 2016–2017 academic year, The General Theological Seminary is blessed by the ministry of three spiritual directors who will offer one-on-one conversations with students, staff, faculty, family members, and residents at the Seminary. Whether you have met with a director in the past or are seeking spiritual direction for the first time, they are present and passionate about discerning with you how the Spirit is moving in your life.

For more information about our spiritual directors and how to make an appointment, download the information sheet: GTS Spiritual Directors Fall '16.

Please contact the CCS (ccs@gts.edu) if you have additional questions.

Registration Open for Intensive Course in Spiritual Direction

A spiritual direction course that is offered as an intensive weekend each fall and spring will begin in a few weeks. Westina Matthews, one of our community's spiritual directors and CCS faculty, will be teaching AT 330: Contemplative Supervision for Individual and Group Spiritual Direction, and she still has space available for more students. It is a great opportunity for students already in the spiritual direction program, as well as for anyone who wants to learn more about contemplative spiritual practices. The course will meet November 7-9, 9:30am-3:00pm on both Friday and Saturday and then 2:00-5:00pm on Sunday. It is worth 1 supervision credit for the spiritual direction certificate, but Dr. Matthews is offering the option of taking it for 2 credits if you write a longer paper.

Please check out the reading list and syllabus and sign up for the class right away. If you are a matriculated student, contact the Registrar (registrar@gts.edu) to register; if you are a non-matriculated student, or “General Learner,” please go to Take a Course (on the www.gts.edu main menu) and register.

Feel free to contact Jodi Belcher at ccs@gts.edu if you have questions.
