IN MEMORIAM: Randy Greene ’07

Randall (Randy) Ashley Greene, Class of 2007 and a former member of our Board of Trustees, died on September 29, 2021. Greene had retired in 2020 and moved to Colorado from his home in Greenwich, Connecticut, where he was a longtime parishoner at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church. He had been suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

In addition to his degree from General, Greene also studied at Yale Divinity School. He was the Chairman of the Bishop’s Diocesan Advisory Committee in Connecticut, a member of the Compass Rose Society, and a long time member of the Church Club.

Greene was the former chairman emeritus of the Corporate Angel Network, which flies cancer patients to treatment centers. For more than 20 years he led Safe Flight Instrument Corp., based in White Plains, New York. The company is a developer of aircraft safety and performance technology for corporate, commercial, and general aviation aircraft. Founded by his father, Greene took over the company in 2001 and served as chairman of the board, president and CEO.

For his efforts with the Corporate Angel Network, Greene received the Aviation Week Laureate award. Throughout his career he also received awards from the Children’s Dream Foundation and the Joseph T. Nall Safety Award and was named a McDonald Statesman of Aviation by the National Aeronautic Association.

Greene held 19 U.S. patents and published multiple technical papers in a variety of leading aviation journals. As a pilot, he logged more than 9,500 flight hours in 270 aircraft types. He was an associate fellow of the Society of Experimental Test Pilots and an FAA-designated test pilot for FAR 23,25, 27 and 29 aircraft.

He began his career as a charter and U.S. Forest Service pilot in Taos, New Mexico, then served as program manager and engineering test pilot for Bendixʼs general aviation avionics division, and at Allied Signal Aerospace as director for international government relations.

In 1988, he founded Commander Aircraft in Oklahoma City, following his acquisition of the former Rockwell Commander single-engine 112/114 series of aircraft from Gulfstream Aerospace. He led a successful public offering of the company in 1991.

Greene is survived by his wife, Anne, and son, Bennet. A service will be held Monday, November 8, 2021 at 10am at St. John's Episcopal Church in Boulder, Colorado.
