The General Prison Project
The General Prison Project builds relationships between people who live inside prison and people who live outside prison so that all might grow in the experience of God’s love. Founded by The Rev. Dr. Julie Faith Parker, students and alumni are invited to connect with this life-giving exchange of letters that promote friendship and encouragement.
The General Prison Project and GTS have also become partner organizations of The Campaign to Close Rikers. Rikers Island, one of the largest penal colonies in the world, is also notoriously dangerous. Thanks to the organizing of survivors of Rikers, impacted family members, and allies, New York City is legally required to close the jails on Rikers. And yet, in the last year alone 33 people have died.
Members of the General Prison Project attend rallies and vigils calling for the city to implement a plan, and to mourn those who have been lost. The General Prison Project is becoming more involved in the campaign and circulates information about related events as they arise.
