A New Book from Henry Ruschmeyer ‘78

The Rev. Henry Cassell Ruschmeyer, Class of 1978, has a new book from Christian Faith Publishing: The English Way of Life: A Critique (2020). Ruschmeyer explores the mysteries of the English way of life, drawing on his time serving in a central London parish and, simultaneously, as a teacher of religious studies at a private secondary school in south London.

Taking an inside look into English legal, political, social, educational, commercial, athletic, international, and religious institutions, Ruschmeyer attempts to penetrate “the English fog” – a metaphor of “the many uncomfortable situations in which the English find themselves to which there are no apparent answers.” In so doing, he investigates how “the ethic of a people determines how they act in life situations … and can be seen in their daily activities, by the words they say …  and by the things they do, both publicly and privately.”

Ruschmeyer’s previous work includes Chateaugay Lake: The Adirondack Resoirt Era 1830-1917 from North Country Books. He completed his undergraduate studies at Union College, and graduate studies at Bank Street College of Education, General, and New York University. He has served at various parishes, including St. Peter’s Church, Albany, NY; Church of the Ascension, Manhattan; and St. Paul’s Church, Knightsbridge, London. While in England, he also taught religious studies at Emanuel School, Battersea Rise, London. Now retired, he lives in Sarasota, Florida.
