“Deacons Talking about ‘Ministry with those with Hearing Loss” with Gene Bourquin ’14

The Rev. Dr. Eugene Bourquin, Class of 2014, will lead a webinar Monday, December 13, 2021 from 8:00 – 9:00 pm EST on learning ways to welcome, integrate, and serve people with hearing loss. Bourquin serves as the Pastoral Missioner to the Deaf (and people with sensory disabilities) in the 200 parishes and facilities of the Diocese of New York. As a caregiver to people who are deaf, deafblind, hard of hearing, blind or experiencing any combination of sensory loss, he serves as a liaison and ministerial support on behalf of the Bishop throughout the diocese. Gene’s ministry has personal motivation. He is a person living with vision and hearing loss.

A native New Yorker who worked for nearly three decades at the national center on deafblindness in suburban New York and for a decade at the Lexington School for the Deaf, Bourquin was the first person to be nationally certified in both American Sign Language interpretation and Orientation and Mobility for the blind. He holds a master’s degree in deafness rehabilitation and a doctorate in healthcare administration; he has lectured internationally and nationally on topics related to drivers’ yielding, sign interpretation, and communication and mobility with Deafblind people.
