IN MEMORIAM: John Harriman ’48

The Rev. John Frederick Harriman, Class of 1948, died August 17, 2022 in Bellingham, Washington, age 97. Born March 30, 1925 in Marshfield, Wisconsin to Earl Henry and Doris Mabel (Mason) Harriman, he attended public schools in Stevens Point, Wisconsin and then the University of Wisconsin, Madison (BA 1945); before attending General. Harriman also received a PhD in Counseling Psychology from the University of Washington in 1978.

After ordination in 1948, Harriman ministered in the Philippines, Chicago, and Michigan, as Episcopal campus chaplain at Western Washington University in Bellingham 1963-1970, and the University of Washington in Seattle 1972-1974; and as chaplain at Veterans Affairs Hospital in Seattle, 1975-1990.

Harriman retired in 1990 and returned to Bellingham. He was received into the Orthodox Church in 1993 and attended St. Innocent Antiochian Orthodox Church, Everson, and St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church, Bellingham. Survived by niece Anne K. Harriman, nephews Stephen J. Harriman and Michael J. Pearson and niece Jane Pearson Gorrell. He was preceded in death by sister Anne Harriman Pearson and brother Richard Harriman. Harriman’s funeral service was held at St. Innocent on Saturday, August 20th at 11 AM with a graveside service following at Nooksack Cemetery, 3330 Breckenridge Rd. in Everson.
