Julia Madden: Blending Vocational Expertise with Theological Insight

Julia Madden, a pioneering member of Cohort 1 and the first graduate of GTS’s Hybrid Program, reflects on her multifaceted journey with a sense of fulfillment and excitement for the future. Originally from Belmont, NC, Julia has balanced her professional role as a Senior Contracts Manager for HGL with her deep commitment to ministry, a testament to her versatile capabilities and dedication.

Julia was drawn to General Theological Seminary by its reputation for academic excellence and the innovative hybrid program. “I have clergy friends who are alumni and wonderful priests. The opportunity to be part of something new at GTS, along with its initial class offerings, really attracted me,” she shares. Her admiration for GTS’s complex history and its narrative of resurrection further solidified her choice.

During her time at GTS, Julia engaged in a significant project at Church of Our Saviour in Lincolnton, NC. Faced with unmarked graves, including those of enslaved individuals, Julia spearheaded a comprehensive plan involving ground-penetrating radar surveys, property deeds research, and the development of cemetery policies. This endeavor, which combined her expertise in contracts management with her theological education, underscored her commitment to justice and historical recognition. “This project allowed me to blend my career skills with my GTS learning, addressing issues of historical erasure and racism,” she explains.

Julia’s education at GTS provided her with a robust theological framework and practical skills. The CXM program, in particular, was instrumental in her formation. “I refined my preaching, teaching, and pastoral care through various initiatives like the blessing bag ministry and pub theology,” she notes. Her field placement, supported by mentor Rev. Liz Tester and academic advisor Dr. Roland, offered crucial hands-on experience and guidance.

The camaraderie and support from her cohort have been vital. “Cohort 1 has been a source of love, care, and support through all challenges,” Julia says, highlighting the close-knit community that has journeyed with her through academic rigors and personal milestones.

Looking to the future, Julia envisions a path of continued service and growth, deeply rooted in the foundations laid at GTS. “In five years, I see myself utilizing the theological and practical tools I’ve gained to navigate the evolving landscape of ministry,” she predicts.
