IN MEMORIAM: Davis Fisher ’67
The Rev. Davis L. Fisher, Class of 1967, died July 16, 2022, aged 80. He was born April 2, 1942 in Oak Park, Ill., the son of F. Theodore Fisher and Helen Davis Fisher. After growing up in the Chicago area, Fisher attended Lawrence University in Appleton, Wis., before training for the priesthood at General. He later received an M.B.A. from the University of Chicago and a Master's Degree from Garrett Theological Seminary in Evanston, Ill.
Fisher’s 55 years as an Episcopal priest were spent as an Associate Priest in several Chicago area churches as well as interim director for Cathedral Shelter, a charity that serves the homeless. A major focus of his ministry was the promotion of a bi-vocational approach to ministry. He formed a national organization, NASSAM, to encourage the self-supporting active ministry that he believed was essential to the future of the church.
While serving as a priest on a part-time basis, his business career included banking and trust management, sales training, money research, presentations, and consulting. He founded Moneytree Consulting to help people explore their personal relationship to money and determine how money impacts relationships, behavior and decisions. Many of Fisher's money insights came from extensive interviews with individuals, from multi-millionaires to people living in poverty, and from his personal meeting with Mother Teresa and his work among the poor in Haiti, India and Africa.
He married Linda Ramsey Neburka in 1985, and they brought five children to their family from prior marriages. Davis was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Charles; and an infant daughter, Courtney. Surviving are his wife, Linda, of Portland, Ore.; a daughter, Elizabeth F. Mooney (Mike) of Mill Valley, Calif.; his son, Ian M. Fisher (Byrd) of Wilmette, Ill.; a daughter, Sarah F. Snecinski (John) of Tampa, Fla.; and two step-children, William Neburka (Rachel Dumont) and Julie Neburka (Sandie Peters) of Portland, Ore. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Morgan and Madison Fisher, Michael and Ian Mooney, Anna and Ryan Snecinski, and Mae and Beatrice Neburka.
In all of his pursuits, including the time he spent with family and friends, Fisher assumed the best of people and approached others with genuine curiosity and interest. With his wry wit and endless repertoire of stories and anecdotes, he was seldom without words. His lifelong hobby and skill with magic delighted his grandchildren and their friends. Davis and Linda moved to Portland, Ore., in 2013 and later into the Holladay Park Plaza retirement community. As he had all his life, Davis relished exploring a new place, meeting new people, and learning their stories…and looking for a room full of people he didn't yet know.
A memorial service will be held in the fall, at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Evanston, Ill. Memorials may be made to Haiti Partners (www.haitipartners.org). Please sign the online guest book at www.oregonlive.com/obits
