A New Call for Sam Smith ‘09

The Rev. Samuel J. Smith, Class of 2009, has been called as the next Rector of All Saints Episcopal Church in Worcester, Massachusetts. Smith currently serves as the rector of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, where he has led the congregation for six and a half years. Prior to moving to Massachusetts, he served St. Michael’s Church on the Upper West Side of Manhattan as its Assistant Priest. He also served as the Director of Programs for Episcopal Charities, the outreach arm of the Diocese of New York, and as an assisting priest at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine.

Smith has been active in leadership roles in the Diocese of Western Massachusetts, having served on the Standing Committee and as the lead co-chair for the 2018 Revival with The Most Reverend Michael Curry. He currently serves as the Chair of the Diocesan Commission on Ministry. In the Berkshires he has been Vice Chair of the board for Berkshire United Way and a board member at the Riverbrook Residence in Stockbridge.

A native of Texas, Smith is the son of a United Methodist Pastor. Before beginning his vocation in the Church, he worked in professional opera for 17 years, primarily in the areas of administration, fundraising, and marketing. He holds degrees from Southwestern University in Georgetown, TX (a bachelor’s degree in Vocal Performance), and Indiana University (a master’s degree in Stage Direction for Opera) before receiving his Master of Divinity from General. While at General Sam served as the Seminary’s Chief Sacristan; he also received the Seminary’s top prize for excellence in preaching. He is married to Don Temples, former Director of Development at General.
