Welcome to Wrexham

We all have moments when we just need to “veg out” and watch some TV. Like all entertainment, one needs to consume the TV in moderation, but in moderation it is good. And if you are anything like me, then you appreciate the occasional recommendation.

Sitting with the Rev. Dr. Robert Heaney and the Rev. Dr. James Farwell last Monday at the VTS Faculty Retreat, they were inviting me to discover the "Extraordinary Attorney Woo" on Amazon Prime. I received their recommendation with delight. In response, I suggested that they should consider watching the Hulu TV show "Welcome To Wrexham".

Now I grant you, it helps if you love soccer. But even if you don't, then you will enjoy learning about Wales. The documentary in nice manageable thirty minute chunks (this reflects my age, I am still awake after thirty minutes) takes you through the purchase of Wrexham A.F.C. by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. It is not simply a series where America meets Wales and where Americans engage with the mystery of soccer, but it is also a profound exploration of hope, community, and aspiration. The language is a tad unsuitable for anyone young, but for those able to cope it is an extraordinary documentary.
