Social Justice at General

New York City is more than just our mailing address; it is our mission field. The words “Blessed are they that enter in through the gates and into the City” carved into the steps of the Chapel express a fundamental orientation of this community serving God’s mission in, with, and for the City of New York. As General begins its third century, we continue to seek new ways to pour God’s reckless, abundant, and life changing love out to the city.

  • Queer Advent

When AIDS was first identified in New York in 1982, communities of faith were required to face their own sense of belonging and mission. In honor of these 40 years of awareness and activism, General Theological Seminary’s Center for Queer Theology is curating Queer Advent | Anticipating Joy, a four-week worship series centering LGBTQ+ life and celebration this holiday season.

  • General Prison Project

The General Prison Project builds relationships between people who live inside prison and people who live outside prison so that all might grow in the experience of God’s love. Founded by The Rev. Dr. Julie Faith Parker, students and alumni are invited to connect with this life-giving exchange of friendship and encouragement.

  • The Pauli Murray Collective

The Pauli Murray Collective was formed in the last two years to support women and non-binary students at General Theological Seminary. Pauli Murray '76 was a legal champion for the 20th century's key efforts for civil rights. S/he was the first Black person to earn a JSD (Doctor of the Science of Law) degree from Yale Law School, a founder of the National Organization for Women, and the first Black person perceived as a woman to be ordained an Episcopal priest.
